We interrupt this broadcast to talk about ART and TRUTH.

So many people—musicians and film buffs alike—have been speaking favorably about the recent Bob Dylan movie, The Complete Unknown. The film struck a chord with me as well, representing a time I didn’t live through but was deeply influenced by as a young person. Bob Dylan’s music was often a companion in my early 20s, especially the albums Blood on the Tracks and Bringing It All Back Home.

I found the movie deeply engaging—not just in its depiction of the era but as a portrait of an artist’s life. However, what resonated with me most was Dylan’s unwavering dedication to his creative voice. He didn’t tow the line. As his music career unfolded, he honored the counter-culture lyrics and musical styles that moved him. In that spirit, he defied folk music norms by playing an electric guitar, incorporating rock and blues influences. I admire Dylan and countless other artists who have pushed against the current to find their authentic style, despite opposition, boos from the crowd, and disapproving authority figures.

As I get older, I am increasingly aware of the passage of time and want to dedicate myself to activities and offerings that align with my values and provide a true sense of purpose. When I started working in film over 12 years ago, I felt the need to break free from my roles as an art therapist and teacher. I had to shake things up and reclaim the uncensored, edgy artist self I embodied as a young person. And what a journey it has been—transforming my work and opening my world once again.

I offer you these questions to reflect on:

  • In what ways have you played it safe in your art, life, or expression to maintain security or seek approval?
  • What creative work or activity is calling to you from deep within?
  • What could you do that might mystify others but inspire you to experience new ways of being?

P.S. The Complete Unknown is now streaming on Hulu and other streaming services, so you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
